Rear-End Collision Accidents

Rear-end collisions are among the most common types of auto accidents in Illinois and throughout the country. And depending on the speed of the rear car when it crashes into the lead car, injuries sustained can be quite serious. But even in a collision at low speed or a “fender bender”, there may be injuries that do not become known until later on. For this reason, whenever motorists are involved in a rear-end accident, they should always exchange insurance information and speak with an experienced Chicago auto collision attorney.

Common Causes of Rear-End Collisions

A rear end collision is most often the result of a negligent driver that is either driving aggressively or not paying proper attention to the other cars on the road. For example, if the lead driver slows down to stop at a stoplight or avoid another danger on the road and the rear driver is looking down at his smartphone texting his friend, he may not realize that the lead driver has slowed down until it is too late. Another factor that often contributes to rear end accidents is faulty equipment such as brake failure or engine malfunctions. Poor weather can also be a factor as some drivers fail to slow down to an appropriate speed for the weather they are traveling in.

Rear-End Collision Injuries

In a rear-end accident, the driver of the rear car is usually (though not always) at fault and the driver and passengers in the lead car are usually the ones that bear the brunt of the injuries. The force and mass of the oncoming vehicle (the rear car) is transferred to the stopped vehicle (the lead car). This can lead to a number of serious injuries, including:

  • Head and Facial Injuries
  • Neck Injuries (Whiplash)
  • Shoulder Injuries
  • Upper/Lower Back Injuries
  • Bone Fractures

If you or someone you know has been involved in a rear-end accident, you may be entitled to compensation for the injuries sustained. Be sure to seek medical attention right away, even if you do not notice any immediate symptoms of an injury. Next, speak with one of the Chicago auto collision lawyers at Hurley McKenna & Mertz, P.C.
