The Telly Awards have announced “Amy Clark's Story” and “The Hill Family Story” as bronze winners in the online video documentary category, created by Hurley McKenna and Mertz, P.C. and Sprout Films. With over 13,000 entries from all 50 states and numerous countries, this is truly an honor.
“The Clark Family” follows dedicated mother Amy L. Clark in her care for her two boys, both born with Angelman Syndrome. After the birth of her older son, Brandon, Ms. Clark trusted doctors for genetic advice and counseling to confirm that if she had another child, he or she would inherit the Angelman Syndrome gene. When her second son, Timothy, experienced the same symptoms as Brandon, Ms. Clark was devastated with the realization that her doctors' lack of attention to detail and malpractice would cause her family to pay a high price. Chris Hurley and Mark McKenna's ten-year dedication to the Clark case led to a change to Illinois law so that parents of profoundly disabled children could recover damages when medical malpractice led to wrongful birth.
“The Hill Family Story” depicts the life of Ryan Hill, son of Jennifer and Ted Hill, who suffers from a permanent brain injury. The injury was resulted from the nurses' continued administration of Picotin, despite it being against the hospital's written policy in this scenario. As a result, Ryan relies on his family to execute many daily tasks and attends Special Education classes.
Both videos make the families' stories come alive, helping highlight the particular care that children with disabilities require, as well as Hurley McKenna and Mertz, P.C.'s role in understanding those needs and recovering the necessary damages.
