The Archdiocese of Chicago is investigating allegations that one of its priests, Fr. David Ryan, sexually abused children at Maryville Academy in Des Plaines, Illinois, approximately 25 years ago.
Fr. Ryan started working at Maryville Academy in 1985, and he became Acting Executive Director of Maryville in 2003. Maryville states on its website that it is “a child care organization rooted in Catholic social teaching.” When Ryan was working at Maryville, it had locations serving children at sites in Des Plaines, Chicago, Bartlett, Maywood, Durand and a summer camp in Eagle River, Wisconsin.
Fr. Ryan also served as Assistant Director of the Catholic Youth Organization of the Archdiocese of Chicago when appointed in 1991 by Joseph Cardinal Bernardin.
From January through July of 2005, Fr. Ryan was assigned to St. Emily Parish in Mount Prospect, Illinois. He has served as Pastor of St. Francis de Sales Parish in Lake Zurich since 2006.
This story was initially reported at NBC Chicago.
The Archdiocese of Chicago, which covers Cook and Lake counties, serves around 2.2 million Catholics.
